The first successful airship was made in France in 1884, but Germany later took the lead with its Zeppelins, which were used in the First World War for bombing and reconnaissance, as well as for long-distance passenger services. A series of disasters, culminating in the burning of the German Hindenburg at Lakehurst, New Jersey (1937), put an end to the use of hydrogen-filled airships. In recent years there has been a revival of airships using non-flammable helium and modern constructional materials
