The piano was developed in Italy in the early 18th century. The earliest models were of harpsichord shape, but by about 1860 this was largely replaced by the upright piano. The upright piano, with strings running perpendicularly rather than horizontally, is today more common than the larger, less compact, grand piano, in which the strings run horizontally
